Apesar das hist\u00f3rias protagonizadas pelo personagem n\u00e3o serem seus \u00fanicos trabalhos publicados, certamente s\u00e3o aquelas que lhe deram a fama.<\/p>\n<p>O brilhante Sherlock Holmes, entretanto, n\u00e3o \u00e9 uma cria\u00e7\u00e3o exclusiva da mente do escritor brit\u00e2nico. A inspira\u00e7\u00e3o para o personagem veio de uma pessoa muito pr\u00f3xima a Conan Doyle: o Dr. Joseph Bell, seu professor de medicina na Universidade de Edimburgo, na Esc\u00f3cia.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Bell nasceu em 1837 na capital escocesa e se formou em medicina na mesma universidade onde posteriormente daria aulas. Ele se especializou em cirurgia, servindo como cirurgi\u00e3o particular da Rainha Vit\u00f3ria quando esta se encontrava em terras escocesas. Al\u00e9m de um m\u00e9dico brilhante, o Dr. Bell era fascinado pela natureza, em especial pelas flores e jardins, e pela literatura, que exercia como poeta amador.<\/p>\n<p>O que mais impressionava os alunos do Dr. Bell era sua incr\u00edvel habilidade de observa\u00e7\u00e3o. Ele analisava a forma como uma pessoa se movia, conseguindo distinguir se o paciente se tratava de um marinheiro ou de um soldado, por exemplo. Caso fosse um marinheiro, ele procurava por suas tatuagens em uma tentativa de saber por que lugares do mundo ele havia passado. O m\u00e9dico tamb\u00e9m treinou o ouvido para identificar diferen\u00e7as sutis nos sotaques dos indiv\u00edduos e observava suas m\u00e3os para determinar a profiss\u00e3o que exerciam.<\/p>\n<p>Al\u00e9m da espantosa capacidade dedutiva, Sherlock Holmes compartilha muitas caracter\u00edsticas f\u00edsicas com o Dr. Bell: o jeito en\u00e9rgico de caminhar, o nariz e o queixo angulares, a testa alta e o brilho astuto dos olhos.\u00a0Assim como o Dr. Bell fazia com seus alunos, Sherlock Holmes gosta de incentivar o Dr. Watson, seu companheiro e melhor amigo, a exercitar a capacidade anal\u00edtica e tirar suas pr\u00f3prias conclus\u00f5es. Conan Doyle foi, ele mesmo, uma esp\u00e9cie de Dr. Watson para o mestre, servindo como assistente do professor ao final do segundo ano de faculdade. O escritor divide com o personagem, ainda, a forma\u00e7\u00e3o acad\u00eamica em medicina.<\/p>\n<p>A refer\u00eancia ao Dr. Bell \u00e9 t\u00e3o clara que Robert Louis Stevenson, famoso escritor escoc\u00eas, escreveu ao amigo Conan Doyle, ap\u00f3s ler uma das hist\u00f3rias de Sherlock Holmes: \u201cSeria esse meu velho amigo Joe Bell?\u201d. O criador do personagem n\u00e3o deixou d\u00favidas.
